Elisa Kate Named May “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With Her Song “Be Still”

By Dale Kawashima Share

Elisa Kate

Elisa Kate, a promising, pop/rock/jazz singer/songwriter based in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, has won the May SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of her song “Be Still.” This song is featured on her debut album, Treasure, which she released independently in 2008.

"Be Still” is a graceful, piano-based ballad, which provides a fine showcase for Kate's rich, soulful vocals. The song starts off with a sparse arrangement (Kate's piano playing and her vocals), and then gradually builds momentum with a fuller band sound. This recording was produced by Hamish McDonald, who produced all the songs on Kate's album. On "Be Still," McDonald plays guitar, bass and drums.

Kate was born and raised on a farm in Bulahdelah, New South Wales, which is north of Newcastle and Sydney on the west coast of Australia. She started to play piano when she was six, and she entered and won several piano competitions. During high school, she also performed in musical theater productions. Kate also developed a passion for contemporary pop & rock, particularly liking the band Switchfoot. "I am very inspired by Switchfoot--I love the truth, questions and hope in their lyrics," she said.

Following high school, Kate attended the Australian Institure of Music in Sydney, where she graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor's Degree, majoring in Vocals/Piano. It was during college that Kate wrote & recorded a 5-song EP, which led to her being a winner at the 2007 Fish Music Awards in Sydney. Then in 2008, she received nominations for Best Female Vocalist and Best Contemporary Song (for "Be Still") at the ABC Newcastle Music Awards.

Notably, Kate said that "'Be Still' was the first song I wrote, and first song I recorded. I released on both my EP and my album, Treasure. I write my own music - I love to sit down at the piano or guitar, and listen to the still breeze, look out onto the farm, and listen to what God wants me to say."

This past year, Kate has been writing new songs, and she was pleased to form her band after performing mostly solo gigs. "I finally found a band in February (2010), who play my original music," explained Kate. "We are currently doing shows in Newcastle and on the coast, and we're preparing to record my second album in July/August. Then a tour of the north coast will follow, from Sydney to Brisbane to launch the new album." Kate's band consists of Greg Nix (electric guitar), Dan Bruce (bass) and Phil Ridley (drums).
