Claudia Sofia Wins April SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition

By Dale Kawashima

Claudia Sofia, a talented singer based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, has won the March SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of the new song “Try,” which is one of three songs that Sofia has recorded with writer/producer Gerry Stober (who wrote this song with France Robert). Stober is a veteran writer/producer who has had several Canadian and European hits, plus cuts with Aaron Neville, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Rachael Lampa and No Mercy.

“Try” is an excellent, contemporary pop/R&B song, which showcases Sofia’s clear, soulful vocals. Her big-range, vocal style is in the tradition of top, pop vocalists, such as Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. She also skillfully sang all of the harmonies on this recording, which was adeptly produced by Stober.

Sofia grew up in Montreal, and she began singing when she was 8. She has learned to speak fluently in five languages (English, French, Italian, Spanish and Arabic). For her music training, Sofia attended two schools, Music Circle (for five years), and a classical music school, Vincent D’Indy (for three years). “I learned a lot from attending both schools,” recalled Sofia. “Music Circle is excellent for pop music training. It was also a good experience for me to attend Vincent D’Indy, where I learned to sing opera and classical. The classical training helped me further develop my vocal range.”

When she was 15, Sofia first began recording her vocals in a studio. She was a finalist in the Grandy Note Festival, and she won free studio time for her prize. She subsequently recorded several songs, which were cover versions of famous hits. The demos impressed the owner of the Music Circle school, plus prominent mixer/engineer Serban Ghenea, who referred Sofia to writer/producer Stober (who was based in Montreal at the time; he is now based in Los Angeles). Stober was also impressed, so he and Sofia began recording together in 2003.

“It’s been great working with Gerry,” said Sofia. “I learned how to sing new, original songs, and not just cover songs. Singing new songs has helped me develop my own direction and sound. I’m looking forward to recording again with Gerry this summer. I really liked the three songs we’ve done, which were more pop. But I’d also like to experiment a bit more, doing R&B and rock which is more edgy. On the rock side, I really like Evanescence and their sound.”

After her next set of recordings are completed with Stober, Sofia should have enough songs to release her debut album. Stober is currently meeting with label execs in the U.S., Canada and France, to attract label interest in her. In addition to her music career, Sofia is presently attending McGill University in Montreal. ‘I’m excited about completing my album, and releasing it as an independent, or with a major label. I’m also looking forward to performing some live shows, and developing my own songwriting.”
