Meritxell Wins May SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition

By Dale Kawashima

Meritxell, an exceptional singer & songwriter based in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area, has won the May SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of the song “Yearning And Hoping” (written by Terri Stott of Washington D.C.).  Meritxell has recently completed her album, The Meritxell Project, and she is in the process of securing distribution for the CD in the U.S., Europe and Latin America.

“Yearning And Hoping” is an excellent, contemporary R&B ballad, which showcases Meritxell’s powerful, soulful vocals. This specific recording is fairly basic (just piano and vocals), but Meritxell’s strong vocals helps give the song a memorable impact. Meritxell is a successful, pro singer & artist, who is adept at many genres, including pop, R&B, jazz and Latin.

Meritxell grew up in Barcelona, Spain, and she began singing publicly in talent shows during her middle school years. By age 18, Meritxell had become a professional singer, doing sessions for album projects, commercials, and performing live shows with bands. She also sang on several TV shows, and was a finalist for a talent contest in Spain.

Then in 1996, Meritxell moved to Texas and soon after Nashville, to build her artist and songwriting career in the U.S. “I was able to sign a publishing & production deal with EMI Publishing in Nashville,” recalled Meritxell. “This deal (which lasted four years) allowed me to get great exposure and experience with my songwriting, and to learn more about the music business.”

In 2000, she relocated to New York City, where she strengthened her live, performing skills by doing a wide variety of club and corporate gigs. But it was her move to Washington D.C. in 2002, which led to her creative and business partnership with Gary Granger, who is a prominent, bassist/writer/producer. Granger (who has toured with John Scofield for years) and Meritxell began collaborating (as writers & producers) on songs for her album, The Meritxell Project. The album consists of 11 songs, sung in English and Spanish, featuring such diverse styles as world beat, ballads, r&b, rock/funk and tropical Latin.

Merixtell (who has an endorsement deal with Sabine Microphone Systems) is very excited about her upcoming album. “I’m proud of the album, and Gary (Granger) and I will be performing in many countries to promote it,” said Meritxell. “We’ve recently played gigs in Barcelona, London, Frankfurt, and at a jazz festival in Poland. We’re on tour worldwide with Paul Reed Smith, whom Gary has a signature series endorsement deal with. In addition, we have dates in Japan, Italy and Paris coming up, and we’ll be playing at the NAMM show in Indianapolis this summer.”
